Frequently Asked Questions
What is Supported Independent Living Service?
- Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a service offered by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to aid individuals with disabilities who require ongoing assistance with daily tasks.
- SIL helps people live independently in shared or individual homes by providing personalized support, such as personal care, meal preparation, medication management, and participation in community activities.
- It’s important to note that SIL doesn’t cover accommodation, which falls under the Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) category of the NDIS.
What makes Supported Independent Living different from Individualised Support?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is like help in your home. It gives you aid with daily tasks, such as cooking and cleaning, to make you more independent at home.
Individualized Support is more than just home help. It provides a wide range of aids, including transport and therapy, to help you in all parts of your life, not just at home.
In simple terms, SIL helps you at home, while Individualized Support helps you everywhere.
How many people usually live together in SIL?
In a SIL home, you could be living by yourself or with up to 4 others. The number of housemates will depend on your needs and the amount of your NDIS funding. The choice to live alone or with others is entirely up to you.
Can I still see my current doctor and go to my daytime programs after switching to SIL?
Switching to SIL won’t affect your regular healthcare visits or daytime activities. We facilitate your appointments with existing health providers for a smooth experience. If you wish to attend your usual daytime programs, that’s no problem. We ensure your transition is hassle-free.
Can friends and family visit me in a SIL home?
Of course, since it’s your home, you have the freedom to invite your friends and family over whenever you like. Furthermore, your family and friends can contact our support team to stay in touch with you.
What items can I bring into my new SIL home?
We encourage you to bring anything that helps make your SIL home feel like your own. Feel free to bring any personal items that would make your stay more comfortable and enjoyable, such as:
- Your preferred bedding,
- favourite electronics,
- personal photographs,
- or activities that you enjoy.
Both your room and communal spaces offer ample room for storing your belongings.
How do I move to my new SIL home?
We work with you, your family or caregiver, and therapy teams to make a personalised plan for your transition. The plan could include:
- a visit to your new place,
- spending time with the support team during the day,
- staying overnight before moving in,
- or move straight in.
Our goal is to ensure a seamless transition that aligns with your preferences.
What are my expenses in SIL?
Although your SIL funding covers the costs of your support staff, you are responsible for covering your personal expenses, such as:
- Your own food
- A contribution towards rent
- A percentage of utilities
We collaborate with you and/or your guardians to ensure these costs remain affordable.
What facilities are included in a SIL home?
In a SIL home, you can expect:
- 24/7 support tailored to your needs and preferences
- Encouragement and assistance to live independently in your own home
- Essential kitchen appliances and equipment
- Comfortable lounge room furniture and a TV
- Wifi access
- Provision of all necessary cleaning supplies and equipment
